This inquiry-based unit guides students through fundamental scientific concepts that help them understand the science behind the magnificent James Webb Space Telescope.
This is an inquiry-based unit designed to encourage students to figure out key scientific concepts by learning about the science behind this technological marvel.
Throughout the unit, students will explore specific topics including waves, the electromagnetic spectrum, the Doppler effect, redshift and the Big Bang as a way to frame a larger discussion on the effects that technology has had on the world. It doesn’t require any previous knowledge of these topics since all of the fundamental concepts are introduced during the unit.
To support student learning and skill development, the unit includes a range of engaging activities that promote thinking, problem solving, structured note-taking, and vocabulary building.

- A 45-page learning guide that introduces key skills and concepts,
- Worksheets and quizzes for formative assessment,
- A summative task sheet that guides students through making an explainer video about a technology of their choice,
- A Slides presentation to help clarify ideas in class,
- A Google Form that students can use to reflect on their learning.
Materials Required:
- An old phone that can install apps but won’t be missed if it breaks.
- A tennis ball.
- Six or so marbles.
- A large tub (about the size of a large cooler).
- At least one device (tablet or phone) that can film in slo-motion.
- Students will need personal computing devices.
