Sometimes when things are uncertain, it can be tempting to jump to a conclusion. Unfortunately, this can make us fixate on a specific idea and deny our responsibility to justify our conclusion. In this worksheet and accompanying video I show you how to explore other possibilities and recognise when you, or others, have shifted the burden of proof.

This worksheet is designed to support my YouTube video on the Burden of Proof, where I discuss the problems with jumping to conclusions and also shifting the burden of proof. The first set of questions follows Harvard's "Project Zero" thinking routine 'Take Note', to help kids focus on the key ideas of the video while considering things they'd like to know more about. After watching the video, the questions then build in complexity from simple recall to more challenging open-ended questions that students can discuss in a group.
This worksheet is part of a series on how we can overcome cognitive biases and logical fallacies using the systematic thinking routines offered by science.
The .zip file contains a PDF copy of the worksheet as well as an editable Microsoft Word copy.
